Bringing back life to a broken CFL

Bringing back life to a broken CFL

Today’s, most of us use CFL lamps instead of traditional tungsten bulbs, as CFL’s has more bright light, saves energy about 80%, works on low voltages etc…

The main drawback of CFL is it’s cost, and when it’s fallen from our hands, or by kids it gets broken, and there is no way to do the reverse. But we can make CFL’s glow again, by replacing the broken lamp with a same or little low rated Fluorescent lamp lamp with the existing circuit and it will work again.

The post below describes how to do that. In this example, a 23Watt Philips CFL was broken, and we take 18W 2 feet energy saver tube-lamp to replace the broken lamp portion. All we need is: 1 tube of 18W, two good thin wires of length about some inches more than 2 feet, some cello-tapes, Soldering iron, etc….

First, we open and remove the old CFL cap, and expose the inner circuit. (CAUTION: the capacitor may be still charged, so open only CFL’s that are not plugged in socket in the last 1-2 hours). There are 4 terminals, two to each sides of the CFL lamp, we remove the lamp completely and clean the inner circuit with a brush. The new circuit should be as shown in the picture in right(upper one).  After connecting the terminals, by either soldering, or by tight wire loops, we now have to use cello-tapes to fix the tube outside the lamp, and cover all exposed wire, that can cause electrical shock etc..

Now the new homemade CFL is ready to use. You can use this trick for low or high wattage rated CFL’s from the conversion chart.

CFL WATTAGE REPLACE Tube-Lamp
5,6,8                                                         6Watt (Emergency lamp tube)
9,10(low cost china ones)                           9Watt (PL)
11,14,15                                                  11Watt (PL)
18,20,23                                             18/20Watt (2? tube)
28,30,33                                                  28Watt (T5)
36,40,45,50,54                                    36/40Watt (4? tube)

MR ARUP EXCELLENT AND OUT STANDING WORKS

    VERY USEFUL PROJECTS

KEEP IT UP GOD BLESS U

  2. sir u have connected broken cfl to the tubelight am i right sir

what is the use of broken cfl here while we can connect. the tubelight dirctly to socket without using broken cfl
what i want to ask is that what is the use of briken cfl here

    • Arup

Try yourself connecting tubelight directly to socket and check if it ever glows or not.

Recycling – few ideas better than this, by extending the life of the electronics rather than tossing them in landfill!

I can buy broken CFLs from recyclers for FIVE US CENTS here in Ho Chi Minh City, VietNam.

Attaching the tube to the base might enhance it’s safety.

Sir, can I use 40watt tubelight in 20watt cfl kit?

  5. ajay manjariya

i want to repair electronics choke for 40 watts tube lights pls send me circuit diagram for it . and tell me how to repair it

    • Arup

      Just Google for circuit diagram.

The most common parts that maybe damages are the transistors, and the resistors connected to their emitters. Look at them.

Due to heavy lightning in my area new CFL ‘s get damaged(electronic ckt), is it possible to
repair it and use it again. Normally which part is likely to get damaged first in case of lightning strike? can you send me a CFL ckt and its explanation?

HOW CAN I CONNECT THE CFL CIRCUIT TO A PL (CFL CIRCUIT HAS 4 O/P PIN P1,P2,P3,P4 WHEREAS PL HAS 2 I/P PIN).
    I HAVE SEEN THAT P2 & P4 CONNECTED WITH A CAPACITOR. HELP!

    • Arup

PL has one internal capacitor paralleled to a starter. You need to cut the starter and you’ll see the P2 and P4 pins are inside PL already connected to a capacitor.

    Sir,
Can u tell what is the cost of repairing a transformer of 9watt 2pin PL tube table lamp???

    • Arup

Repairing transformer is a heavy task and includes opening of transformer, unwinding it and rewinding new wire and then refit it. Better if you replace the transformer by buying one or extracting one from other faulty unit.

      • Harsh

Some PL tubes are having only 2 pins…Can I connect those also….

        • Arup

Open the PL, you’ll find a starter and a capacitor inside. Just remove them and you’ll have 4 pins.

          • yacopsaid

How about the lamp 2 pin. All together there will six points?

i Have 18 watt OLd CFL
Can I connect to two 8 watt Emergency Tubes,
Please guide me,I am A Novice[Do not know much about Circuits]

    • Arup

      Connect like this,

      Pin#1 of CFL circuit————-> pin.1 of Tube#1
      pin.2 of Tube#1—————>3.3nF/400V capacitor————–>pin.3 of Tube#1
      pin.4 of Tube#1—————>pin.1 of Tube#2
      pin.2 of Tube#2—————>3.3nF/400V capacitor————–>pin.3 of Tube#2
pin.4 of Tube#1—————>Pin#4 of CFL circuit

      • Sir, In your response about how to connect two 8 watt Emergency Tubes to a 18W CFL elecctronic ballast, you replied:
        Pin#1 of CFL circuit————-> pin.1 of Tube#1
        pin.2 of Tube#1—————>3.3nF/400V capacitor————–>pin.3 of Tube#1
        pin.4 of Tube#1—————>pin.1 of Tube#2
        pin.2 of Tube#2—————>3.3nF/400V capacitor————–>pin.3 of Tube#2
pin.4 of Tube#1—————>Pin#4 of CFL circuit
        Should the last line read,
“pin.4 of Tube#2—————>Pin#4 of CFL circuit”

In emergency lights tube there are 4 pins but we need to connect only 2 wires to the lamp one in each side that connect both the terminal.
Then how to connect it to a cfl?
